Room
Manchester - reader comments |
| "Great
restaurant, great atmosphere, wonderful
food (very inventive deconstructions of classic dishes),
cooked to perfection! Staff were really attentive and helpful.
My friend is lactose intolerant and the waitress bought out a massive
laminated sheet with every single ingredient of every dish and whether
not they contain lactose. A very impressive dining experience.
I'll be back soon for sure."

| "I've
been here a few times and it's usually been fine but the service on
the last occasion was so bad I would never go back again. The decor
is smart and the food is generally ok. Some
of the staff are great, some are almost hostile. For parties of 8
or more they add a 'compulsary' service charge, which
they refuse to waive even if the service is terrible. Also, check
the bill very carefully and make sure they bring back the change as
they will just keep it otherwise. There are much better places to
eat in Manchester."

| "I
went for the the £7 pounds early bird menu. I was very
satisfied with the whole experience but I feel that I wouldn't
have been happy to pay full price for what I had. It was slightly
over priced for the portion I recieved and if it had been
the £16.50, I feel that I wouldn't have been as satified."

| "If
you're looking for a pretentious overpriced 'Brannigans'
then try Room. If however you want sophistication with dinner discourse,
then I would recommend you try any of the many other fine restaurants
Manchester has to offer."

| "I
visited midweek with three friends. The service was excellent.
We all ordered different food and thought it was all quite
special. We shared a Cheese Board and the Asiete of deserts
which were delicious and saved us the pain of having
to make a choice. The only constructive criticism I would make is
that we needed to use a torch to read the menu - lucky I was a girl
guide."

| "I
have been to Room twice now since I discovered it about two months
ago. On my last visit I had the Chicken Liver Pate to start. The pate
was delicious but perhaps they didn't provide enough toast with it.
Luckily we had some bread left over so I used that. I had the 8oz
Fillet Steak for main, medium rare, and cooked to perfection.
It just melted in the mouth. My girlfriend had the Crispy Duck which
was also fantastic. For after's we shared a Cheese
Board. There was plenty of cheese for us to share and a good selection
as well. We visited this restaurant with half price voucher (The Great
Winter Sale) and the bill still came to around £70 for the two
of us. Drinks were not included in the half price sale and they are
quite expensive. I would definitely recommend this
restaurant even with the prices. Try to visit for a special occasion
at least. Fantastic service, good decor. Loved it"

| "The
food is ok, overpriced though for what you get. The
restaurant itself is lovely. I thought the staff
were obnoxious, arrogant and try to get you out before you've
even sat down then rip you off by charging you a service charge (which
they don't deserve) and not returning your change when you haven't
told them to keep it. Also, after complaining to the company who own
Room you get fobbed off with ridiculous excuses. Definitely not recommened
if you want a good night out. And they charge you a service
charge at the bar. Ridiculous! "

"The
food was weird - they are trying to do traditional
English food in different ways, which I don't think they
are successful at. We were told when they sat us down that they were
'all out' of 4 or 5 different dishes. Then when we
ordered my friend was told that they also were all out of a further
dish, so she had to change her order. I went for steak but was told
that they were all out of Bernaise sauce - how the xxxx can a restaurant
be out of sauce!!??!!?? We also had to order all the side
dishes extra, which was quite expensive.
When we finished the waitress told me/us that they had a special dessert,
which was After Eight chocolate and mint something, which sounded
delicious, but when another waiter came back to take our order (about
2 mins after she had left the table) she walked past and whispered
something in his ear. When I ordered the After Eight dessert - surprise
surprise, they were 'ALL OUT' of it. I do not understand how they
could be out of everything we ordered. We decided
to leave the desserts and asked for the bill, which didn't come on
first request. There was also a party in the function room next to
the restaurant and it was very loud, the music competiting with that
of the DJ in the restaurant much to the annoyance of many diners around
us. The waiters tried their best to shut the doors but the guests
were going in and out all the time, leaving the door open. A very
dissapointing experience."

"Another
one of those impressive buildings with the potential
to house a good restaurant. Like Stock, Gaucho Grill, The Colony and
the now dead and gone Le Mont, Room falls sadly short of it's
potential. The menu is so pretentious it's unbelievable.
They were out of allmost half the dishes on the menu
we tried to order and the Crab and Avocado Cocktail starter I opted
for (almost by default) consisted of deep fried crab (I kid you not).
The Chicken Kiev main, which suprisingly actually included chicken,
did so with a hefty £15 price tag! As a bar, Room is
great, the DJ's play superb chilled out music
and the decor is wonderful. Service is good,
and somewhat apologetic for the number of 'sold out' dishes but with
all starters at £5 and all mains at
£15 + an extra £2.75 for sides they should be
equally as apologetic for charging so much when the food is
far from the standard for that price. They do a great
£7 pre-theatre menu but if you're not able to get the
cheap option, it's a restaurant to stay clear of."
