Shimla
Pinks Restaurant Manchester - reader comments

"Theres
a few 'upmarket' Indians in Manchester now, which have tried to distance
themselves from the stereotypical, old school format which accompanies
many Indians, and installed modern decor, lighting, and menus with
a few new twists. Restaurants such as Akbars, EastZEast and Karims
come to mind, and Shimla Pinks is one of these new boys in town.
Of all of these places, Shimlas is both the largest, and also the
one which seems to draw the biggest 'trendy' crowd aswell. There were
a couple of Ferarris parked outside, not that this has any bearing
on the food, which is why you eat out surely? From the moment you
arrive, it definitely felt more of a place to be seen
than the aforementioned eateries, but did the eating experience match
up?
Upon entry, it appeared to be a very smart, modernly decorated,
busy and bustling restaurant, with most of the clientele
dressed up a little more than most people would for a curry. We opted
to try the Executive Banquet, which contained a great variety of dishes
for a reasonable price, albeit a tad pricey for an
Indian. Everything was well cooked, tasted fine,
was presented nicely enough, by friendly
enough waiters. However, fine really is the best term that that you
could use to describe the food and service. There was nothing wrong
with it, everything was OK, we had a good night, but there really
isnt anything to differentiate this from any other mid range curry
house, and dare I say, the food falls below the par set by
the other modern Indians that have appeared in town. Ironically,
even though this is a trendy place, I have to say that the decor also
falls sadly short of the ultra modern Akbars and EastZEast, and the
very impressive Karims. Shimlas needs a bit
of a scrub up to be honest.
We were given a 'Platinum card' with our bill, which entitles the
owner to a discount on further visits, which would probably bring
the price in line with other curry houses in town, but despite this,
I wont be rushing back. So, a great place to be 'seen', if thats your
bag, but if you want the 'Ferarri' of curries as opposed to just seeing
one in the car park whilst you eat, there are many better
options in Manchester city centre these days." -

food, professional and attentive staff,
a great way to avoid the crowds in Rusholme and better than any food
I've found there so far" -
