La Vina Manchester Deansgate Tapas Restaurant - reader comments

"The food was pretty average if not below average at La Vina. The prices for each tapas dish were fine and the portions were not too bad, however one dish was incorrect and the sardines were overcooked, the wine was a well known variety but not really a good selection. The staff were friendly and service was good just a pity the kitchen don't work to the same standards. Would not recommend to any friends, just not worth it." - benn, manchester - NEW MEMBER (21/5/09 - visited on a wednesday evening)

"We went to La Vina for Sunday lunch and waited over an hour despite it being quiet. Other people came in after us and were served before us. We asked the staff twice where our food was and neither of them came back to tell us what was going on. Finally we asked to see the manager who said there had been a mix up with the order in the kitchen. Our waiter said the dishes were cooked to order and we should expect to wait, even though other people had been served and left despite coming in after us. He knocked a fiver off the bill which was derisory given the service. The food was disappointing when it arrived, overly salty and not much flavour of anything else. Would definitely not go back." - barb little, rossendale - NEW MEMBER (20/4/09 - visited on a sunday lunchtime)

"Can't fault La Vina! We walked in without booking and had an amazing evening, the food was so tasty! Incredible melt in your mouth meatballs. Worth every penny and can't wait to go again." - damian goodwin, buxton, derbyshire 23/2/09 (visited on a sunday evening)

"My husband and I visited La Vina on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant decor is fabulous and when busy I can imagine has a wonderful authentic Spanish atmosphere. The Sunday we visited was quiet and we decided to try the special Sunday offer of 8 Tapas dishes for £12.99 each. When the food was served it all tasted delicious and wondered what we had been missing out on all these years. However, the food became cold very quick, possibly due to cold plates, maybe too many tapas dishes and also the air conditioning was blowing cold and it was a winter's day. This turned the meal from being fantastic to disappointing as there is nothing worse than cold food. The service was as expected at a Spanish Restaurant, not overly friendly but polite enough and they did clean our table straight after our meal which we really appreciated. We would however go back again and maybe stay away from the set menu and choose our own (fewer) dishes and just take a seat perhaps upstairs in the restaurant where it may be warmer" - michelle, rochdale 15/1/09 (visited on a sun afternoon)

"I choose La Vina for a romantic birthday meal for my other half as I had heard great reviews from friends and online, but what a disappointment it turned out to be. La Vina did definitely not live up to its reviews. Once we arrived the manger must have had something against my other half (maybe it's the dreadlocks, but it shouldn't matter to him what the customer looks like). We were both dressed up for the occasion because it was my partner's birthday but the manager kept giving my partner the most dirtest looks Ive ever seen! At one point, the manager walked 5 times, yes, 5 times, past our table just to glare at my partner whilst we were waiting for our food - he seemed very rude and intimidating! After the waitress had informed us that part of our dishes that we had ordered were no longer avalible, we had to change 2 dishes, the food arrived just luke warm. After a mouthful of my Paella de Carne, I noticed a great, long, dirty black hair!!! I called the waitress over and showed her what I had found so she went running over to the manager but at this point unfortunately I dropped the hair. Now, because the manager didn't see it, he didnt believe us - I was absolutley disgusted at this point so I put down my knife and fork. My partner decided to carry on eating but low and behold, another hair appeared in the rice. We managed to keep hold of this one to show the manager who again was very rude, turned round and said If you dont want the Paella de Carne don't eat it! Nevermind the 2 hairs we found. This restaurant does have a nice atmosphere and friendly staff (apart from the manager) but unfortunately I won't be eating their hairy food again!" - sasha reardon, manchester 2/9/08 (visited on a tues evening)

"The service at La Vina was good, the ambience good, the music was background Spanish and good, the menu was good, the food was very poor and seemed to be sad and possibly reheated or kept on the hot plates for too long. The food let the place down, which is a great pity." - harry marsden, romiley 19/8/08 (visited on a tues lunch)

"La Vina is a great place for a casual meal in a a lively atmosphere, I love the informality of tapas as you can chat and eat at pace to suit you, The service was great and the sangria is light and fruity, I would highly recommend it! I would however recommend you book a a table as I over heard the door staff advising unbooked customers of up to 2 hours wait, it was packed and there wasn't a a table spare so I was glad we had booked in advance. I would recommend a visit as it's fairly cheap, good food with a great atmosphere." - j sutcliffe, manchester 20/7/08 (visited on a saturday evening)
